In 2007/2008, at least 31 per cent of all recorded crime involved an offender who had consumed alcohol prior to committing the offence.
Each year, thousands of New Zealanders are the innocent victims of other people's excessive drinking through alcohol-related violence, sexual assaults or road accidents.
Research suggests that alcohol is implicated in aggressive and violent behaviour, with increased consumption being associated with increases in antisocial behaviour and aggression.
Reducing the harmful consumption of alcohol can reduce the harms caused to others.
Did you know? In 2005/2006 the cost of the harmful use of alcohol and drugs to the combined justice sector amounted to over $700 million, and alcohol-related offending alone consumed 18 per cent of Police's budget that year.
