Drinking alcohol is something that is deeply embedded in our social, sporting and home life.
For the most part, the reasons people drink are positive, and are commonly associated with celebration and entertainment.
According to the Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand, 88% of men (18+) and 83% of women are happy to claim they are drinkers.
Whether we drink is not the issue. It is the way many of us drink that is the problem. It’s the drinking to get drunk
Do you think being drunk is regarded as normal and acceptable by a majority of New Zealanders?
Is it time to review the laws relating to alcohol to ensure they can help to reduce avoidable harms?
Did you know..... 635,000 adults drink at least once a week and ‘binge’ drink (consumes 7 or more standard drinks in a session) 785,000 adults drink regularly, often every day, and with equal regularity, 'binge' drink 450,000 of us were binge drinking on our last drinking occasion. That’s the population of the entire Wellington region. (2006)
