Q. What are the current laws regarding the age?
There is no minimum age at which it is legal to drink alcohol. The Sale of Liquor Act provides for a minimum age of 18 years to purchase alcohol on or from any licensed premises. It is an offence for a person under 18 years to purchase liquor on or from any licensed premises, or to be found in a restricted area on any premises unless part of a police controlled purchase operation.
Under s38 of the Summary Offences Act 1981, a person under 18 years can be issued with an infringement offence for drinking in a public place if not accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
