Alcohol is responsible for a considerable burden of death, disease and injury. Each year, an estimated 1,000 deaths in New Zealand are directly attributable to alcohol. These deaths are preventable.
The abuse of alcohol is related to a large number of health issues. These include short-term injuries and accidents such as alcohol poisoning, facial fractures and other injuries from road trauma and assaults.
Over the longer term, more than 60 diseases and disorders are related to alcohol abuse including mental illness, cancers, liver disease and alcohol-use disorders.
